Madurai:

Madurai is one of the oldest cities in India; it was a great literary center during the first three centuries of the Christian era, during the period of "academies" or Shangam, whose city was the seat, period regarded as the golden age of Tamil language. Legend has it that when the city was to receive his name, while the god Shiva blessed the land and its people, divine nectar (Madhu) started to rain from her hair, which made the city received the name Madhurapuri.
It is also sometimes called the Athens of the East because of its rich architectural temples. It is also famous for its jasmine flowers that Tamil women enter in hairdressing.

Meenakshi is one of the temples in the most important activity in India. It is dedicated to the wife of Shiva, Parvati, in the form of Meenakshi, "one that has eyes in the shape of fish." Each evening, the statue of Shiva is carried to the shrine of Meenakshi for the two deities spend the night together. Is not it cute? Similarly, once a year, they celebrate their marriage.

The temple has 4 inputs, 4 points. The doors are surmounted by gopurams, towers about 50 meters high, carved entirely of more than a thousand figurines and fully painted stucco. The interior, with its succession of courses taken in each other, is equally amazing with an abundance of sculptures and beautiful paintings.
The tradition is that we throw balls ghee (clarified butter) on the statue of Shiva which is fully screened: it seems it would bring luck.
